The World is Invited to Join as the Extra Haim Bandmate.

"Any idea when you're speaking to Haim?" a text pops up. "I was hoping to ask if I can become their newest bandmate."

There is only a key snag: The author likewise desires to be Haim's fourth member. And we're in plentiful company. Several famous fans have publicly begged for the position.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path playing gigs at local delicatessens with their parents. Today, they are multiple Grammy hopefuls.

Like all the greatest ensembles, they're a tight-knit gang. Their videos repeatedly feature them striding in unison down the avenues of Los Angeles. In concert, they jam with such pure joy you inevitably think, "I wish to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that audience members came up to us and said, 'After your show, I bought a drum kit'," states Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "It is the greatest honor. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can encourage young girls to start a band."

"So everyone are welcome to be the honorary member of Haim."

Grammy Nod

The band are connecting from home, where they're resting up after an major tour in support of their new album, I Quit.

They're right now reeling from the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in contention for the prize.

"I tune into the announcements every year, so it sort of feels like a surreal movie when your name is called," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The importance of the nomination is deeply felt by the sisters.

"We truly set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a significant achievement," adds Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the women that inspired us."

Personal Turmoil and Laughter

The album emerged from a phase of emotional upheaval. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music explores that strange in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to let go.

The lyrics detail endings and goodbyes. The sisters want love, but not the relationships they've had. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they want to be.

"I adore way of putting it, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a slogan. You have to actively work on shutting out the outside opinions and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Evolution of Style

That recent toughness demanded a new sound – more organic and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that began with the percussion.

"The drum sound is such a specific thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums cannot begin until we find the right drum sound."

Stories and Collective Laughter

The band's openness fueled the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters revealed some of their romantic tales.

Someone ended things with Este over a medical consideration. Alana told a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"When you're going through these breakups, you just feel like there's only darkness," notes Alana. "Thus to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's incredible."

A Confident Path

One can easily sense a change in the band. Today, Haim are more certain of their place in the music world.

They're major draws, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide following.

But Haim will forever be their number one focus.

"Me and my siblings have been playing music since I was a young child," concludes Alana. "There is nothing else that we were meant to do. And I'm really fortunate we've made it and we're still going strong."
