‘It’s deeply saddening’: the way thirty captive beluga whales have become pawns in conflict over animal cruelty.

Jelly Bean’s daughter Bertie is an adorable small “sweetheart”. The whale Orion – called “Onion” – is a large but guardian-like friend. Zephyr has “constant motion” and sways like a worm. Lillooet is the “most affectionate” with a gentle spirit.

A group of thirty captive beluga whales in a Canadian amusement park have been entangled in a struggle between a closed attraction, public officials and advocacy groups.

But those closest to the whales say the intense debate over their destiny often fails to consider the individual traits of the whales who, after living their entire lives in enclosed habitats, have been thoroughly researched by the people who see them each day.

After the Canadian government prevented the export of the belugas to a foreign facility, the struggling attraction near Niagara Falls where they are housed stated it would consider to put them down unless the authorities funds the cost of their survival. Canada’s marine resources official has refused that demand, placing the thirty whales in an increasingly precarious position.

Highly Cognitive Sea Creatures

Researchers say that beluga whales’ brain structure, along with their mimicry abilities, cognitive challenges and communal behavior indicate they are remarkably smart creatures – something one caretaker observed personally.

Burgess spent three years as a marine mammal specialist, a job that required earning the trust of the aquatic animals.

“Developing those connections over time takes a lot of consistency and a lot of care. At the outset, they’re very unsure of you,” she said. “In time, you gain mutual trust. And they start being more trusting with you. It’s just so wonderful and fulfilling.”

The trainer knew the whales were very smart, but she says she was nonetheless amazed by the nuances and quirks in their characters. She cultivated a particular love for two female belugas with different personalities.

“Eve accepted me. Cleo made me earn it,” she said. “Both transformed the way I understand bonding.”

Public Concerns and Deteriorating Conditions

Her interaction with the whales developed against a backdrop of rising activist criticism to their enclosure.

During her time at the facility, multiple belugas and the park’s single killer whale, the orca, died. In all, nineteen belugas have perished at the park since 2019, a toll which the park attributes to age-related causes, but which campaigners say indicates the poor conditions in which they were maintained.

The park did not admit visitors to the guests over the summer, but Burgess says she saw with her own eyes results of the closure. “Structural materials is deteriorating from the enclosures because they’re degrading and not being maintained. The whales are exploratory and so they grab fragments and move about with fragments in their mouth. It’s upsetting to see.”

The park did not comment to a request for comment, but previously asserted: “The whales … obtain far superior medical attention and constant care than any human in the Britain, or elsewhere.”

Fate in Limbo and Potential Resolutions

Burgess was dismissed from the facility in early March following the demise of a beluga, an unwell beluga the park staff had to humanely kill. She said the park thought particulars of the incident were disclosed to the news outlets and she was fired not long after.

The ambiguity over the whales’ future has left her and staff members in distress. She says the facility’s warning to end the lives of its whales is a leverage tool and is a “practically unfeasible” task, adding any attempts to put down even a single beluga would require “considerable manpower”, equipment and machinery.

“There’s no way in hell the staff would ever do it,” she said.

She supports demands for the whales to be transferred immediately from the facility, with its deteriorating pools and dwindling staff.

In recent months, the nation’s fisheries minister denied a bid to send the whales to an overseas location.

“Allowing the application would have meant a continued life in confinement and a return to performance for audiences,” the official commented. “As Canadians, we know that marine mammals should be in the sea, not in enclosures for our entertainment. I could not in ethical standing authorize an export that would continue the conditions these belugas have endured.”

But Burgess said the official’s remarks reflect a more general incorrect perception of the facts of existence for belugas raised in confinement.

“The people needs to understand these are whales that have lived entirely in enclosed habitats and they will need ongoing assistance for the remainder of their lives,” she said. “People just don’t realize that it’s not as straightforward as saying ‘end operations’.”

Sanctuary Proposal and Ongoing Debate

As officials attempt to find a solution, ideas have emerged, some of which have minimal feasibility. A suggested plan called for the belugas to be let go into the wilds of northern regions – where whales are a primary resource of nourishment for local populations.

A planned sanctuary in the region of Nova Scotia, which has received regulatory clearance, has proven most controversial. The planned facility, which includes extensive space of penned in ocean, is not yet built. Proponents remain optimistic that it could ultimately represent a sustainable answer for eight of the whales.

But, the former trainer says, among trainers she’s discussed with, there is “doubts there” about what she said is “only an experiment” in the whales’ future.

Others say the possibility of a protected habitat reflects a worldwide trend away from animal displays and could represent a feasible approach in the short term.
